Chippenham Civic Society

Promoting Civic Pride in Chippenham

What We Do

Our main purpose is to:

  • inform
  • educate
  • influence

We monitor and comment on planning applications, seek to influence local authority plans, organise annual Heritage Open Days and have an annual awards evening in May where we recognise good developments, large and small in the town.

Planning Applications

We comment on planning applications where development will affect the historic environment of the town.

Eyesores

We also monitor eyesores around the town.

Social Meetings and Topical Talks

We have an active social programme of monthly talks and visits and keep our members informed through a quarterly illustrated magazine which if full of articles about Chippenham past, present and future.

Local Sponsorship

We have funded a number of restoration projects as well as providing funds for the local museum’s acquisition programme.

We commissioned the Chippenham Calf sculpture now installed in the Borough Parade.

In the summer of 2011 Chippenham Civic Society launched a school essay competition aimed at 11 to 13 year olds who attend school in Chippenham. Press here to see further details and to read the winning essays.

Abbeyfield School’s annual history prize was sponsored by us.

A small donation to a recent flower festival helped towards restoration of this Chippenham landmark.

Conservation and Environment Awards

Each year the Civic Society makes a number of awards to celebrate the achievements of people and organisations in the town who have made a significant contribution to the built and natural environment.

Please see here for details of the 2013 awards.

Heritage Blue  Plaques

We have commissioned and installed several blue plaques around Chippenham to commorate notable people and recognised locally important buildings or events. You can explore them on the Heritage Blue Plaques picture gallery.

Town Council and amenity group meetings

The Civic Society is often represented at local meetings to discuss the future of Chippenham and its local surroundings.
